Character History: SO MANY SPOILERS IN HERE, WOW. As this is a Telltale character his world state is HERE.
"Come on, Lou. You're loud, dramatic, a little annoying, you're basically a walking distraction."
"I think you mean charming and theatrical. Entertaining is another word that springs to mind. Charismatic."
At some point in his childhood, Louis was sent to Ericson's Boarding School for Troubled Youth. Here was also where he met his best friend, Marlon- with whom he was inseparable from a young age, about seven or eight at the very least.
Then the dead began to rise, when Louis and Marlon were around nine years old. The teachers in charge of the school ran- abandoning all the children within to die, with only the school nurse, Ms Martin, remaining to take care of them. Marlon took charge of the haven, creating a Lost Boys-esque safe place, for the children of the school, and those which somehow found their way there. Louis did his part, building traps for game- and larger ones to take down any walkers who came too close to the school perimeter. They had a good system in place- though kids left sometimes, and a small few died- they managed to keep the school a secret, and kept each other alive. At some point, Ms Martin was killed by walkers, and she was left tied up in the greenhouse where she turned.
Louis formed a strong modus operandi throughout the apocalypse- to take each day as it comes, to set his sights on surviving for the day and not worry about what tomorrow brought. It made the other kids (particularly Violet and Aasim) see him as a slacker who took nothing seriously, who consistently refused to plan for the long-term. Yet, he remained with the group as one of their hunters, remaining relentlessly cheerful and upbeat. At some point, he fashioned himself his own weapon- a broken off chair leg that he hammered some nails in, turning it into a make-shift mace. He proudly named the weapon "Chairles" and kept it with him at all times.
One day, during a scavenging party with Marlon and his second in command Brody, Minnie and Sophie; a pair of twins, were killed by walkers (or so the group were told), the loss of which hit the group hard. They left behind their younger brother, Tenn. The school, including Louis, mourned them, burying their things in the school grounds in lieu of giving them proper graves.
"Thankfully, I was here to calm him down with my alluring music."
A year after the loss of Minnie and Sophie, Clementine and AJ found their way to the school. They set off a trap in a nearby train station, causing an explosion and alerting the kids to their situation. They were rescued and brought to the school to heal. While Clem was still out cold, Louis was tasked with keeping an eye on AJ- who was a handful while his caretaker was out of commission. AJ took a bite out of Ruby, another kid in the school when she came up behind him- though Louis managed to defuse the situation by playing the piano. Having never seen one before, it was enough to fascinate AJ, and Louis was happy to have a captive audience.
Clementine came to collect AJ and Louis was instantly besotted with her. He introduced himself and joked about AJ's reaction to Ruby. He was very unnerved when Clem handed AJ a gun, raising concerns that someone so young shouldn't have such a dangerous weapon. Clem assured him that AJ could handle it, and unwilling to put his nose into their business, Louis shrugged it off and went back to playing piano. This led him to playing and singing a rendition of "Oh My Darling, Clementine" to try and impress the girl in question. Clementine allowed him to preform without interrupting him, much to his delight. He then allowed a nervous AJ to press some piano keys - assuring the younger boy that he was a "natural" at it. The moment was interrupted by Marlon, asking for help in aiding a returning hunting party.
They gathered at the gates, where Clem met an abrasive Violet- unhappy that the explosion and car crash attracted more walkers than usual, which had endangered the hunting party trying to return to the school. Louis stepped in to introduce the two to each other, assuring Clem that Violet "grows on you". He showed off Chairles, much to Clementine's confusion. Violet, Louis, Marlon and Clem headed out of the school grounds to deal with the walkers, using traps of Louis' creation to take down a few. The hunting party made it back safely, while Louis happily bantered with Violet and Clem about their walker-killing techniques.
"I hope you know Louis didn't mean any harm there. He's just the world's biggest dumbass. He's my best friend so I can legally call him that."
The group returned to the school, where they sat down to the meal brought back by the hunting party. AJ ate his food quickly, and was left still hungry. Louis, despite still being hungry himself, gave the rest of his meal to the younger boy- promising he was full. The meal done, Louis brought out a pack of cards- in order to play a game of War - using the system to allow the group to ask Clementine questions about herself- and letting her do the same to them, stating he wanted to "get to know her".
Most of the school declined, leaving Clem, Louis, Violet and Marlon to play the game. He learned that AJ's parents were dead, but were mostly good people- a point he said made sense, as AJ was a "nice kid". Clementine won the next round, asking the group if they ever met anyone famous- to which they all replied in the negative. Clem talked about Javier, a former baseball player- Louis excitedly proclaiming that he used to love baseball. Louis won the next round, awkwardly asking Clementine if she'd ever had a boyfriend, assuring her that he'd never had a girlfriend- he learned that she hadn't, a fact that seemingly disappointed him.
Marlon won the next round, asking Clem who looked out for her. They learned about Lee- and how he taught her how to shoot a gun. Violet was next up with a question- asking Clementine who she thought would die first out of the four of them. Clementine replied "Louis, definitely", something the rest of the group (including Louis) agreed with. Louis won the last round, gingerly asking Clementine if she ever had to kill someone she loved. Clementine talked about Lee- and how she had to shoot him to prevent him from turning, a fact which Louis sympathised with. The mood brought down, Clementine headed to bed- Marlon apologising for Louis on the way, promising that he never meant any harm.
"There's only one guarantee: this moment. That's the only thing you got, only thing any of us got. Might as well enjoy it."
The next morning, Clem joined Aasim and Louis on a hunting run. Louis found a walker in one of his traps, excitedly proclaiming it a walker pinata- and wanting to play with it. Aasim, always annoyed at Louis' goofing off, stormed off to catch rabbits- while Clem and AJ stayed behind. Louis offered up Chairles to Clem, telling her to take a few swings at the walker. They joked about it, as Clem finished it off- Louis asking her if she felt better, letting off a little steam on the walker- showing his true reasons for playing around with it.
He went on to explain to her that Aasim and the others saw him as a slacker, who never took anything seriously- but he argued that he didn't see much point in planning for the long term, seen as any of them could be killed at any time in the dangerous world they lived in. He explained to Clem that because of this, he lived in the moment, never letting any chance slip past him, because in the end, today was all that mattered.
The hunting party had poor results, and in checking on Violet and Brody's fishing party, the group found traps had been tampered with and supplies stolen. Brody went back to the school to inform Marlon, while Clem, Louis, Violet and AJ decided to go outside the school's safe zone to see if any food was left at the train station. Thanks to the earlier explosion, the place was swarming with walkers. Clem suggested someone take a nearby bell, and use the noise to distract the walkers while the others went inside to get the food. Violet suggested Louis- who was at first reluctant, until Clem convinced him otherwise. He jokingly told the girls if he died "Walker Louis is coming after you first". He clambered onto a nearby train cart, making a racket- not stopping until the others came running out again- having run into an adult- a raider by the name of Abel. But they'd got a good stack of food out of it, enough to last them a few days.
"This is how adults do things, not us."
The group brought back the food, Louis triumphantly quoting from Othello as they did so. Brody learned about Abel and showed real fear that he might find the school. Regardless, the group sat down to eat, Violet and Louis excusing themselves early- Tenn stating it was because it was the anniversary of the twins' death, and they were sad.
Everything hit into high gear later that night, when Clem learned from Brody that Marlon had traded the twins to the group of raiders in order to keep himself and the school safe- which resulting in Marlon killing Brody- a crime which he tried to pin on Clem. Outside in the storm, he waved the gun he just took from AJ around the group, as Clem tried to talk sense into them. Marlon grew ever more angry and desperate, as the truth started to come out. Clem appealed to Louis, who was initially reluctant to get between her and his best friend. Clem angrily told him to "bury me deep" telling him when she came back, she'd go after him first, echoing his words at the train station back at him. This convinced Louis to step in, standing between Marlon and Clem, doing his best to talk Marlon down, getting him to drop the gun. Between them, they managed it- Clem telling Marlon they'd find a way to make things right again- something Louis very much supported. None of it would come to fruition, however, because AJ recovered his gun, shooting Marlon in the head.
Louis reacted in absolute horror, telling AJ he was a murderer and rounding on Clementine, asking her what she was teaching the kid- in killing Marlon when he was no longer a threat. As the other kids started to gather their wits, Violet stepped in to prevent more violence, sending Clem and AJ to their room- something Louis was deeply unhappy about- seeing it as Violet trying to sweep Marlon's death under the rug. He angrily suggested that AJ was a danger to the group, and that any one of them could be shot by him next, if they did something he "didn't like".
"It's bullshit, and you'd know it if you weren't so used to burying your head in the sand."
The next morning, Louis was at Marlon and Brody's funeral- the pair buried in the little graveyard on the school grounds. He was distressed to see Clem and AJ turn up for it - at Violet and Tenn's request. He stepped into his usual role as peace keeper when Violet refused to speak in remembrance of Marlon trying to ease an angry Mitch - who called him out, pointing out Marlon was Louis' best friend and their anger was justified. When AJ expressed a wish to atone for his actions, Louis hit breaking point - shutting down and walking away.
The school decided to take a vote, on if Clem and AJ could stay with them. The majority (Louis included) decided that they had to leave. He and Violet arrived at the pairs' room, to break the news. AJ asked if he and Clem could vote, a request Louis moodily put down, telling him it didn't work that way. Violet, one of the three people who voted for them to stay, rounded on him, telling him it should be. Louis responded in anger back, telling her the vote was fair and she'd agreed to go along with the result. Violet argued back that he buries his head in the sand- and that if he didn't, he'd see how unfair kicking the pair out actually was. Louis snapped, telling her that she could hate Marlon all she wanted, but it didn't mean AJ wasn't dangerous- a statement he clearly regretted after seeing the hurt on AJ's face, looking away ashamed. Violet informed the pair she and Louis were there to escort them out of the grounds, Louis pointing out they could have happily dumped them outside the gates- despite the hurt expression on his face suggesting he felt otherwise. Louis demanded AJ hand his gun over to him, unwilling to walk out into the woods with the boy armed. Clem allowed him to do this, and Louis showed real distress, holding the weapon that had murdered his friend, and realising he'd taken away one of AJ and Clem's means of protection. The four of them set off out of the school.
As they walked through the woods- Louis overheard AJ and Clementine talking- the boy worried that his shoes would give out and his feet would start bleeding again, as they no longer had a car to help them keep moving. Guilt crossed his face once more, before he told them it wasn't so bad- that they'd done it before- trying to assuage his own guilt. Clem snapped that he'd lived behind walls for the entirety of the apocalypse, and he had no idea what the outside world was really like, silencing him. They made it to the end of the schools safe zone, Violet offered her goodbyes, but Louis declined, stating he'd already said plenty. He hesitated before leaving, though, stating that he "must be stupid"- offering AJ's gun back to him. He held it for a moment longer, making solid eye contact with the younger boy- silently making sure he understood the gravity of the action, before letting it go. He cast the pair one sad look, before turning and walking away back to the school.
He didn't get far, though- Clem and AJ were cornered by a pair of raiders (Abel, from the train station and Lilly, a face from Clem's past) - they were trying to make Clementine lead them to the school, and help them take away all the kids when Violet and Louis arrived on the scene, sneaking up behind them. With her bow and arrow trained on Lilly, Clementine told her to take the shot. Violet hit her mark, and in retaliation, Abel took a shot at Louis, hitting him in the arm. Louis and Violet ran off back to the school, while Clem and AJ ran further into the woods, AJ getting shot himself along the way.
"For years I sat around making stupid jokes, playing stupid games, while my best friend was left with all the responsibility. All the tough calls. All the sleepless nights. And, eventually, a bullet in the head. And I didn't do a damn thing about it."
After getting help from a boy on his own in the woods, James, Clementine brought AJ back to the school- he needed his wounds tending to and the chance to heal up. Louis was by the gate when she arrived, and though he was initially unhappy to see her again, when he saw AJ was hurt, he raced outside without a second thought. He picked AJ up, Clementine too exhausted to carry him any more- despite his arm wound and the pain it caused him. He brought AJ back inside, and remained by his side while Ruby took care of him. He stayed with AJ while Clem brought Violet up to speed on the looming danger- Clem walking in on him crouching by the sleeping boy, apologising and asking him to "please be okay". Caught, Louis stood up, started to speak to Clem, before losing his nerve and walking away.
He went back to them later that night, with an offering of clean clothes for AJ- seen as his others were torn up with bullet holes. He asked after AJ, Clem assuring him he was getting better and thanking Louis for carrying him in. Louis made smalltalk, about how the school was preparing for raiders- how Mitch was creating bombs to help- but it was all awkward and stilted. Eventually, he brought up what he really wanted to talk about- the likelihood of Clem and AJ remaining in the school, and how most of the group seemed to be okay with it. When Clem quizzed him on his own feelings on the matter, he responded that it was fine, while AJ got better. When she pressed him on what happened after that- Louis unhappily told her that he didn't know. This woke up AJ, who on seeing Louis lit up, telling Louis that he'd missed him, and asking him if they were "friends again". Louis struggled to find an answer, telling AJ to get some sleep instead. As he turned to leave- Clem stopped him, apologising for her and AJ's actions being the cause of his pain. He admitted it wasn't just them- that Marlon had a hand in it too- but struggled to go on, instead opting to wish them goodnight and leave the room.
Two weeks went by, as the school prepared their defences. One afternoon, Violet and Louis were arguing- Violet wanting Louis to help her board up a hallway- and Louis stating he had something else he needed to do. Angry, Violet told him to take this seriously, Louis snapping that that he had been- when Violet retorted he had to get over himself, he stormed off. Clementine overheard the conversation, and after speaking with Violet came across Louis trying (and failing miserably) to fire Marlon's bow. When she enquired what he was doing, Louis pointed out that very soon the raiders would be on top of them, and then it "wouldn't matter how much I sucked at this". Clementine assured him they would survive the raider's assault, to which Louis pointed out she sounded like Marlon- in the old days. He continued, telling her how he remained in ignorant bliss to the struggles Marlon was facing- that he joked around and did nothing to help his best friend - his guilt for Marlon's breakdown finally bubbling over to the surface. He went on to apologise to her, for blaming her and AJ for Marlon's death- wishing he could take it back. Clementine forgave him, explaining that she understood why he did it. Louis admitted he loved Marlon like a brother, but the things he did were "fucked up". Peace brought between them once more, Louis gave Clementine Marlon's bow, assuring her that she couldn't be any worse at it than him- his jokes coming back out, telling her he would laugh if she missed. She didn't, of course, much to both their amusement. As Clem headed off to do other things, Louis thanked her "for all of it". He admitted that he would have done the work Violet wanted him to, just later.
The peace was interrupted by a fight between Willy and Aasim, over a trap to set up in the school building - resulting in Willy punching Aasim. Noticing the tension in the group, and understanding that if it was allowed to fester, it would get worse and divide them further, Louis stepped in. Ever the caretaker of the emotional well-being of the group, he announced they needed to let off steam, and play a game- Truth or Dare - using his trusty pack of cards to give it a new spin. He teased Aasim about his crush on Ruby, starting to lighten the mood between the group. Violet went first, asking Clem who she would Marry, Flip (after Tenn admonished her on the word 'fuck') or kill Ruby, James and Aasim. Clementine chose to marry Ruby, flip James and kill Aasim- a fact for which the latter was very grateful to the amusement of everyone. Next up was Clem, who dared Aasim to ask Ruby for a kiss- an action he got a good punch to the gut for instead. Louis was next up, asking Clem if she had feelings for anyone in the group. Clem confirmed she did, but when Louis excitedly pressed her for more details, refused to give them up. Tenn was last to receive a truth from Aasim- the younger boy saying he thought one day the Walker Age would end and something new would blossom in its place. AJ was saddened, pointing out he never knew a world without walkers- having been born into it. Louis gently promised him the world before it was "pretty shitty" so it was okay that he didn't know what it was like. The game wrapped up, Louis grabbing Clementine's attention- so she could watch Aasim and Willy make up, showing her that was the result he was going for. Violet headed off towards the bell tower to check on their defences, while Louis went to the piano room to work on a project that needed a second person. Clementine followed after him.
"Everyone hears the jokes, the piano, and after that they stop listening. You didn't."
Louis was delighted that Clem chose to spend time with him, saying he wanted to play the piano one last time before all hell broke lose. He bantered a little with Clem, before asking her how she felt about their imminent deaths, betraying his true nervousness on the danger before them. He was comforted by her response, and when she asked what he needed her for, showed her the piano was out of tune. He asked her to press the A key (jokingly pointing out which one that was, as she had no idea) so he could tune it from inside. He noticed her half-missing ring finger and asked how it happened- when she relayed the story to him, he assured her that she could still play as well with "nine and a half". He got her to follow his instructions, pressing the key, pressing the pedals and finally blowing on the strings- the latter of which he admitted did nothing to tune the piano, but it was funny to see her do it.
He sat beside her, playing a song that he wrote, admitting he hadn't got a name for it yet, when Clementine asked. When he finished it, he carved his initial into the wood of the piano to mark the occasion, offering his knife to Clem so she could do the same. After carving her initials next to him, she circled them with a heart- something Louis jokingly mistook as a potato, flustered as he correctly identified it for what it was. He dropped his usual cheery facade, telling her he needed to be serious for a moment. He thanked her for being with him, after everything he put her though, and everything he had to work through for himself. He admitted people heard his jokes or his piano playing and stopped listening to him after that- never wanting to look deeper into who he is, pointing out Clem did the opposite. She listened. Clem admitted that she had feelings for him, as more than a friend, something Louis was delighted about- saying he'd hoped when she'd admitted she had a crush on someone in Truth or Dare that it was him- but he hadn't expected it to be the case. He declared that he was naming his song "Clementine" and confirmed that he had feelings for her, too. They kissed, much to his delight, but the rest of the moment was interrupted by Ruby calling Clem to go on her lookout shift.
Later that night, the Delta raiders finally made their attack on the school. Louis caught up with Clem, admitting he didn't know what the D on her hat stood for, but he was going to pretend it meant "Don't Die" and she should "listen to her hat." Delta started the violence quickly- shooting Omar in the leg right off the bat. Lilly tried to lure the kids out of hiding, mentioning that Minnie wanted to come with them, and that she missed her girlfriend, her little brother and the "guy who could always make her laugh" - something that hit Louis hard. Tenn was the one that broke, heading over to her- Clementine broke it up before Lilly could grab Tenn- and Mitch, racing to save his friend was killed by her. Chaos broke out as the kids fought to keep their school and each other safe. At some point, Louis was cornered by a member of Delta, the same time as Violet on the opposite side of the yard. Clementine only had time to save one of them, and she chose Louis. Lilly and the surviving member of Delta cut their losses and ran- taking with them Violet, Omar and Aasim. Louis was horrified and crushed by their loss. Clem assured him they were going to stage a rescue. Louis pointed out they had no idea what Delta's numbers were, or where their base was- luckily, one member had been left behind, a wounded Abel. Louis, Clem and the remaining kids surrounded him, and it's at this point Louis is brought into Wonderland.
Abilities/Special Powers: Louis is a normal 17 year old human, no powers at all. Being from The Walking Dead universe he is infected with the pathogen that makes the dead rise, just like everyone else. Otherwise, unless you count wielding a chair leg with nails in it a power, he's got nothing.
Third-Person Sample:
Louis never especially minded being in Wonderland. It was better than being back home, for certain- not having to survive, day-to-day. The problems was, when you'd made your M.O to only focus on the day-to-day survival, what did you do when suddenly there was a future- where you knew there was a good chance of you surviving to the next day? To the next week? The next month? Longer? He'd spent the last eight years not believing in a future and now suddenly, he had one, and he had no idea how he was supposed to process that. Worse still, the worry over the captured members of the group chewed at him- the guilt that Clem had chosen him, that because she'd chosen him Violet had been taken churning away in his stomach.
So, he did the only thing he knew he could fall back on. He found the music room. The piano was very fancy, shiny and new and perfectly in tune. It was like a fantasy piano, the epitome of perfection, the kind that you'd see in movies, back when there were movies. He sat down at it, fingers running over the front, where his own had it's own special mark- without that, even in all its glossy perfection, this piano was still inferior to the battered old warrior back home.
"Okay, pretty thing, lets see how you sound."
He pressed his fingers to the keys, playing the first thing that came to mind, RĂªverie, L - a little Debussy never hurt anyone, after all. The music played perfect and crisp, the sound surrounding the music room. Louis paused after a while, heaving out a sigh.
"Well, you're annoyingly perfect. I think you could use a little character, maybe a less-fancy name. Like..." he stares at the ceiling. "Plinkleton. Yeah. I dub thee Plinkleton, the too perfect piano."
Maybe talking to himself wasn't a good sign to his mental well-being, but he'd unpack that crap another day. For now, he'd content himself with this annoyingly perfect piano.
First-Person Sample:
[Louis loves the network- what an easy way to reach out to people, to talk to them, to get to know them. People can talk here in a way that's long lost, back home. As such, he's set his device up on the kitchen table, where he's shuffling his pack of cards. He flashes a bright smile at the screen.]
Hey Wonderlandians! I've got a great game of War set up here in the kitchen, if you'd like to come and play. I wanna use it to get to know you guys- might as well if we're all stuck here together right? I've even got assorted snacks, because who doesn't want assorted snacks? No one, that's who.
