In early October, a gift will be left on their doorstep, or in their mailbox. Inside a small box, wrapped in silvery paper, is a Sneakoscope — is a glass spinning top that stands upright when placed on a surface. It contains a note from Luna which reads the following:
Dear Louis,
This is a Sneakoscope, a magical item from my world. It is known as a 'dark detector' and will light up, whistle and spin when it detects that someone untrustworthy is nearby, or if they're doing something deceptive. I hope you'll find it of use in Deerington.
[Okay, but this amazing and he loves it a lot. He generally is a trusting soul, but given how Deerington can be sometimes, it won't hurt. Besides, it might make Daryl be a little less feral about guests. ]
this is cool AF luna!!! it's amazing hopefully no one is actually deceptive around me but hey you never know right
[ 'Might' is the keyword here. Daryl's going to be hella suspicious about the weird magic spinning top that's now in the apartment. Magic, y'all. ]
Alright, I'm understanding you think it's cool but what is "AF"?
[ She isn't down with all the text talk just yet, Louis. ]
That's the idea, yes. Especially considering how things go in this town. I imagine it might prove useful if someone's under the town's influence and not acting their usual self? Sometimes it's not always so easy to spot it with your own eyes.
that's right! you just say af like the letters and in this case it's positive it's like being SUPER that thing as good as it's possible to be at a thing
[She is a sweet soul and he wants to teach her so much.]
nice can't wait to use it and be paranoid about my neighbours actually, Daryl will probably use it on half the people in the building that'll be a thing but yeah i get it
I didn't realise it was a word that could be so versatile! I had no idea. So you can say things like 'smart af' or 'funny af'? It like the ultimate of the word that precedes it?
[ Peter is going to flip at him teaching her swearwords. Even he doesn't swear in front of her. ]
It does have a degree of paranoia-inducing feelings, admittedly. Not knowing who you can trust? It's a downside. But at least when it doesn't spin, you know everything's well! :)
Your housemate, I presume? He doesn't trust people?
YES! you got it it's super versatile you can use it for just about any situation you like!
[Sorry, not-sorry, Peter. This is an important life lesson.]
there is that!
nope he trusts no one and nothing kinda squinty all the time but i know he's got a good heart underneath it all even if he won't admit it got this tough man in the woods thing going on but i like him
And in a way, you're not technically swearing, are you? You're not actually saying the word, after all. It's more the feeling of it, I suppose.
[ You're a terrible influence, Louis. ]
From what I've heard about your world, I suppose you can't really blame him for not trusting people. Although you're not so much like that?
People who tend to be like that are often very much caring people underneath, it's true. They've just been hurt a lot. It's a rather counter-productive way of being, though.
But admitting things is quite difficult, I suppose.
That's it! Swearing without being really caught out. Anyone questions it? They're just letters, they can't prove shit.
[He's PROUD to be a terrible influence.]
I'm not, no. I like to have a little more faith in people. It's... not a popular opinion these days, honestly. Being suspicious and looking out for yourself is seen as a better survival tactic, but I can help it. I still think humanity deserves a shot at doing this shit together.
Yeah, exactly. They've been hurt pretty bad and wham bam up go those walls to prevent themselves from being hurt again.
[ Look, she might not be one for swearing, but she can certainly appreciate the ingenuity of it. She's still a Ravenclaw after all, aka a nerd. ]
But hasn't this been going on in your world for a long time now? I have to say, it does speak a good deal about your character if you've been like this all that time. It's very admirable, Louis.
[ Gently uplifting friends~~ ]
I suppose in a way you can't blame him. None of us wants to hurt, do we? But I suppose, from experience, it just requires a little extra patience.
i mean i guess? i don't think we should really be handing out awards here for not being an asshole seems kinda depressing if you think about it for too long
[She's a good egg and he appreciates her a lot!]
nope! and i've got a sledgehammer made of love and friendship ain't no one can stand that
Well, no. You have a good point there. But look at it this way. If it's considered usual to not be kind to others? If it's far easier to be a horrible person rather than a kind one? You're going against the odds of what's expected. Of what's easier.
You don't have to be kind, but you are. That's what makes it more poignant, you know?
.... Do you actually have a sledgehammer made of love and friendship? Considering it's Deerington, after all.
[ Look, nothing's impossible here. But yeah, they're definite in danger. FROM LOVE. ]
i guess? i don't know i just don't think it costs anything to be a decent person, you know? it kinda bugs me that the world doesn't see it that way either
for sure not my world anyway my world is a festering shithole where most people are out for themselves and i just miss kindness honestly
[The world changed and even though the old one was broken too, he's not sure if the new one is any better.]
a gift

Date: 2020-10-22 04:18 pm (UTC)I didn't think you could use that word... positively? I thought it was a bad word?
[ She is a sweet summer child in the realms of swearing and modern slang in general, really. ]
That's precisely the point, yes. So even the sneakiest of Sleepers trying to hide their intentions can be foiled!
You're very welcome. I'd say I hope you won't have to use it, but it's better to be safe. You know?
